If you want to attract an interesting selection of birds into your yard pay attention to the type of feed that you put in your feeder. Most people who are not familiar with birds think that birds only eat seeds. These are bags of sunflower or thistle seeds available in pet stores. But not all birds feed on seeds. The hummingbird, for example prefers sweetened water.

For this reason, bird feeders come in different types. The platform type is the simplest and is good for the seed eating bird. Just pour the seed on the platform and birds will enjoy a good meal. Thistle feeders have very small holes so the thistle seeds don’t fall out. It is usually in tube form. Tube feeders are also right for the hummingbird. The Victorian bird feeder is an example of a tube feeder in the form of a post lamp. It is ornamental as well as functional.
