Wrens are passerine birds belonging to the New World family Troglodytidae. Troglodytes, as they may also be called, mean “cave dwellers,” referring to their tendencies to forage in dark spaces. This is why wren houses are constructed with little openings, to allow wrens to be comfortable as if they are in their natural habitat.
Wren houses need not have perches on them since the birds normally do not perch. Finishes are also not imperative, but colored roofing paper will help keep out the rain from the birdhouse. The hole should also be in the right size for the wren to come in but small enough to keep bigger birds like sparrows out.
