The Purple martin is a kind of the North American swallow. It can be characterized by its large head and thick chest. The males’ coloring is dark all over while the females tend to have a lighter, dingy colored underside. Purple Martins are known to get their food and water while in flight. They do so by swooping down bodies of water to catch small insects and scoop water with their beaks.
Back in the olden days, early North Americans used hollowed out gourds and hung them for purple martins to nest in. Nowadays, purple martin gourds are available in different materials. These gourds still maintain a slight resemblance to the real thing. They are great for keeping purple martins safe from the elements. In fact some of these gourds have drain holes just in case a bit of rain does get in.
