Purple martins are the largest members of the swallow family. Typically, a purple martin seeks out man-made bird houses. As such, a purple martin bird house should primary use wood as the material because it is weather resistant. It should measure at least 6 inches across on the inside, and should have an entry hole of about two and a half inches in diameter.

In addition, a good ventilation and drainage is important as in any bird house for that matter. Drilling holes on the floor to keep rainwater from staying inside the house and putting small holes on the ceiling provides good ventilation as well. Check also that the entrances of bird houses should not have perches so as to protect your bird from predators such as cats, squirrels and raccoons. Always remember that your backyard inhabitants’ protection, comfort and safety should be your utmost priority.
