Purple martins are considered North America’s biggest swallow. They are considered annual guests since they only migrate once a year. This is the reason why purple martin bird houses owners are called landlords. These bird houses are mostly made from lightweight aluminum, wood, plastic or metal. Their exterior should always be white to keep the house cool in hot weather.
Purple martin bird houses come in different sizes: some with 8 units and others with as much as 28 units. It is important to note that purple martins live in colonies. The size of the house compartments should be no less than 6 x 6 inches each. This should keep the birds comfortable while protecting them from possible predators. Landlords welcome these species every year for they are not only beautiful to watch but they do help a lot in eliminating insects.
