Work of (Wood) Art

There is a woodworking technique that uses various shapes, sizes, and types of wood. These are fitted together to create a 3-dimensional, mosaic-like picture. The result is called Intarsia, a wood creation that uses natural grain patterns and colors of different types of wood. The artist selects specific woods to be used within the pattern.

Each piece of wood is then cut, shaped, and sanded one by one. At times, extra pieces of plywood are used to create more depth by raising certain areas of the pattern. Once all pieces are done, they are arranged to fit together like a jigsaw puzzle then glued to a piece of wood backing like Baltic birch or plywood. Lastly the backing is cut to the outline shape of the final product and a last coat of finish is applied.
