One of the joys of travel is bringing home gifts that are native of the country you’ve been from. Matryoshka dolls are nesting dolls in decreasing sizes. The smallest doll is put inside the next size and to the next size and so on. A popular version is that of the biggest doll being the mother followed by dolls of different genders representing children, ending with a baby. There are certainly a lot of other versions.

These dolls are definitely from Russia. It is believed to have been born in the 1800s. Its name suggests motherhood and is certainly related to fertility. The fact that you can be surprised by what comes out when you open a doll is exciting in itself. But what make it more attractive are the colorful designs that adorn each piece.
