A generator serves as a back-up source of energy during brownouts and blackouts. Typically it runs on gasoline or diesel. It has an engine attached to an electrical generator (usually called an alternator) to produce electric energy. Besides being an emergency power supply, a generator can also be used in places without connection to the power grid. There are different types of generators depending on power and use.

For diesel generators, the small portable one can range from 1kVA to 10kVA. This generator has enough power for construction sites or vehicles like mobile homes. A commercial generator can run on 8kVA to 30kVA for small shops and offices. It can go up to 2000kVA for large office complexes and factories. Diesel generators with 250kVA are commonly used to supplement power to utility grids during peak periods.
