Dutch ovens

One of the advantages of cast iron cook ware is that it can withstand intense heat. Popular versions are Dutch ovens. These are solid pots with high sides and tight fitting lids. They were to our grandfathers what an oven is to our modern housewife. The older version of the Dutch oven were ideal to take along on camping trips because they did not need a lot of caring.

The modern Dutch oven has a different look. While the older versions had legs, the modern kind has smooth bottoms, designed for the modern cook top. Materials used are more of aluminum and ceramics and less of cast iron. They are designed for cooking stews and similar dishes that need to cook slowly for a longer period of time. Modern techniques in cooking entail putting the Dutch oven inside a traditional oven for a really slow cooking process.
