Once in a blue moon, in family gatherings such as Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas Day lunches you will be serving baked turkey or a pot roast. Get your carving knives ready. A little silver polish will clean it if it discolors. Be careful not to keep it in a drawer with other knives as it might dull the blade. Keep it in a knife holder when not in use.
In olden times, carving knives were already in use. But guests in a party used to carve their own meat. The hosts and important guests were, of course, looked after. These days, carving the meat is reserved for the head of the family. It is looked upon as an honor. Carving roast meat or bird is an art and is looked forward to with great anticipation by family members and guests.
