Whether you are a housewife taking care of a family or a restaurateur feeding hundreds of people every day, your kitchen will always have a knife sharpener. Knife sharpeners remove burrs, file and hone the edges of knife blades so that they are sharp when used for cutting meats and vegetables. You have a choice between manual and electric knife sharpener models. Sharpening stones and sharpening steels are the two kinds of manual knife sharpeners. Sharpening a knife is not an easy job for the inexperienced because the knife should be kept at a certain angle and a certain motion should be followed across the grinding surface.
Electric models are easier because they operate automatically. Most models can sharpen straight and serrated knife blades. Whether you prefer a manual knife sharpener or an automatic one, you should be concerned about guarding your hands to protect it from getting cut or scratched. Make sure that you have chosen a sharpener that is compatible with your knives. For your different kinds of knives you might want to get a multi-slotted knife sharpener with each slot having a different function.
