This American artist and designer worked in the decorative arts and became known for his work in stained glass. He designed stained glass windows and lamps, glass mosaics, blown glass, jewelry and metalwork. He was the son of a jewelry store owner. It was his father’s trade that inspired him to get involved in the decorative arts. He set up his own company called Louis Comfort Tiffany and Associated American Artists.

Louis Comfort Tiffany was responsible for some significant innovations in the world of stained glass. He favored using colored glass over painting clear glass, the method used by contemporary artists. Louis Comfort Tiffany also patented a type of iridescent glass he called Favrile, from the Old French for “homemade.” Louis Comfort Tiffany was inspired in part by medieval glass works, which did not use paint to color the glass. Tiffany used opalescent glass in a variety of colors and textures to create a unique style of stained glass.
