To handymen, pliers are indispensable tools. These are hand tools that are used to hold objects firmly. Sometimes they have additional functions, such as cutting wire. Pliers will consist of a pair of metal levers joint at some point. The arrangement creates a mechanical advantage making the hand grip stronger. Pliers are also used to manipulate small objects that are difficult to handle with bare fingers.

Some pliers can be locked into position. Vice grip pliers are popular locking pliers. The jaws are set to a size slightly smaller than the diameter of what is to be gripped by turning the bolt in one handle with the jaws closed. When the jaws are opened and the handles squeezed together, they move a lever over its center point and lock the jaw of the pliers onto the gripped object. A typical usage would be to hold metal parts in place for welding.
